Growing up ...

He picks things up really fast and throws it as fast as he picks them. Is that normal in a kid that's growing and learning the laws of physics?

It seems so.

As Luca develops strength, his throws seem rather deadly. This evening he picked up a tin of sweets and swung it in the direction of the domestic helper. Almost hitting her.

Sandy immediately disciplined the boy. She was right to do so.

Although the boy does it unknowingly, a throw like this can cause physical damage to whomever is in his way and we will not tolerate such behaviour leaving his throws to chance.

What if the item indeed hit the helper in the eye? We would be guilty for the longest time.

Therefore raising our hands to hit him is to teach him that his actions are wrong and never to do it again.

Of course it'll take more than one hit to have him learn the lesson but it is necessary.

I don't know how else to teach him but to raise my voice as well as spank him.

Do you have any tips for me?

Teaching him ... it's hard.

This morning my little rascal slammed his plastic racket right into my chest while I was happily watching television. Well, I know he didn't mean to do that but still he needed to know it wasn't right to do such an act.

I took his hand and slapped it hard. It hurt. My fingers hurt. His eyes welled up with tears and he cried really softly with his face down. Barely ten seconds later, he stopped and looked at me. He learnt his lesson.

I too learnt mine. I should not have hit him with my fingers. I should have done the exact same action he did on me. Slam the racket at him.

Ok. Kidding. You think I'm nuts? I aren't. At least not yet.

But frankly, I needed him to know that it hurts and that it is not right to use a racket or any other item to hit someone. If I took no action and let him be, it will be difficult teaching him in the future.

I am sure you'll agree with me.

Nevertheless, Luca and I are still the best of friends.

Emotionally attached to one another.

A Stubborn Son ...

Perhaps he takes after his father. Someone who dislikes being lectured or told what to do. Someone who feels his way is perhaps the best way.

Luca will someday talk back to me like I did to my parents. Retribution to its max. Of course i will love him like how my parents loved me.

This evening he tried to play with my computer and when I refused to let him put his hands on the keyboard, he retaliated. He screamed and tugged harder refusing to budge .

He was lucky his mother took him away if not he will be spanked really hard for being the naughty boy he is.

Anyway I am very sure he will carry on this behaviour even when he becomes a father.

An exact same behaviour in me.

Watching his first NDP

It's the nation's birthday as Singapore celebrates 46 years of independence but for Luca it's his first.

Catching the parade on television, Luca seems to be engrossed only with the marching contingents and not the fireworks.

Funnily, he clapped when the President arrived. Perhaps Luca is aware that this parade will be President Nathan's last before he steps down as Head of State.

This year's parade had quite an interesting storyline and I kind of enjoyed it. Maybe because it somewhat relates to me - a father teaching his son the Singapore spirit.

Come to think of it ... Do we Singaporeans have a spirit that's uniquely Singapore? What comes to mind is kiasuism. (not sure if I got the spelling right as there's no autocorrect for this word on my iPhone)

I guess kiasuism indeed helped our nation grow as Singapore progresses throughout the years. We just didn't want to be left out in any way thinkable. We sure don't want to lose out in anything good. See. That's kiasuism for you. (it seems this word is now logged in my iPhone as I need not spell the word out in full)

Anyway, I take this opportunity to wish all Singaporeans a happy national day.

We have to be thankful for the pioneers of this nation who have done everything they could to build Singapore into a strong economy as well as a safe and sound place for the people.

I'm sure this nation is thankful for LKY's contributions.

And I am very proud to be Singaporean.
