Barney ...

I never expected Luca to like Barney, the purple dinosaur which many other children adore. I was expecting him to be cooler and chose something that wasn't really mainstream. Maybe Strawberry Shortcake. I liked Strawberry Shortcake. :)

Unfortunately he has set his eyes on Barney.

Like any other father who loves his child to the max, I wanted Luca to have a soft toy of the supposedly extinct creature to keep him company thus I hit the toys stores in search of Barney.

So off I went to Toys R Us where they played that irritating jingle over their speakers and funny how I sang along to the lyrics of it

....'I don't want to grow up ....'

That music brought me back to my younger days where I saw myself accompanied by my parents at the flagship store opposite Parkway Parade. I remembered the layout of that store and also thought back on amount of toys my parents purchased for me whenever I asked them to.

They hardly said no to my pleas. They always gave in.

So today as I walked through the isles which were lined up with toys, I told myself that whatever Luca wanted I will get it for him.

We walked and I found myself lost. I didn't know what was good for the boy and he too didn't know what he wanted.

We saw Barney. He likes Barney. He hugged Barney. He was very gentle when handling Barney.

One problem - Barney is much taller than he is.

I found myself approaching the staff and asked for a smaller piece of Barney and was told none were available.

At that moment I wondered why I even bothered to ask. Did I really want Barney to share my bed?

NO.

I made up dozens of excuses to convince myself that Barney isn't going to stay at my house.

Not one that huge which will surely catch my attention whenever I entered the room.

So Barney never made it to my house and I had to tell Luca to leave the purple chap behind at the toy store.

He did so reluctantly and we hurried on towards the exit. Stopping once or twice by items he fancied but he never told me he wanted it.

He hasn't started constructing sentences to the likes of 'Can I have this...?'

Trust me. When he starts, I will have a hard time rejecting weird characters in my house.

Ben Ten. Dora. And many other characters will find refuge in my home.

For now, I still am in control.
